The 2010 Labor Day weekend took a devastating turn when a quiet evening led to a fatal encounter. On a Sunday morning, Brett McFarland discovered his beloved fiancée, Catherine "Kate" Gill, struggling to breathe after having a late-night snack. Despite his desperate efforts to save her using the Heimlich maneuver and calling emergency services, Gill's life was tragically cut short.

Situated just three miles from an ambulance station, McFarland's home in Mashpee, Cape Cod provided hope that Gill's life could be spared. Unfortunately, their secluded abode was barely visible from the main route, and Hurricane Earl had torn down the sign that once directed visitors to the residence. These factors, albeit small, played a significant role in delaying the crucial urgent care Gill urgently needed.
Rhonda Colburn, a well-trained emergency medical dispatcher at Barnstable County Sheriff's Department, answered McFarland's desperate 911 call. Astonishingly, she overlooked some essential questions that could have shed more light on Gill's worsening condition and failed to offer much-needed guidance.
Amidst the confusion, first responders found it challenging to locate the distressed couple's home due to the poor weather and unmarked houses. Gill's life ebbed away as every second passed, and regrettably, upon the eventual arrival of the ambulance after six and a half agonizing minutes, it was, sadly, too late.
In an emotional statement to CBS Boston, a heartbroken McFarland recounted the unimaginable horror of losing a loved one in such a harrowing manner. His pain was palpable as he described how Gill had taken a bite from a marshmallow, which disastrously led to her untimely death.

Following this grievous event, an internal investigation was launched into Colburn's handling of the emergency call, and McFarland filed a lawsuit against the town of Mashpee. His claim laid the blame on the town's inadequate street signage, leading his residence, and the inability of emergency medical personnel to locate the property in time.
Despite this claim, Judge Ruffo opined that the primary cause of Gill's death was choking on the marshmallow rather than the consequences of the delayed response. Nonetheless, Gill's death is a glaring reminder of a system's failure and a cautionary tale underscoring the imperative of rapid and precise emergency responses
